The persistence of huge gap between the living condition of the haves and the have-nots requires proper discourse in respect of development and human rights. This needs evaluation of the western policy of free trade-based liberalization propagated as a panacea in view of the consequential conceptual fallacies and the welfare state. Since liberalism involves application of the rule of law for purposes of development and human rights, the papers included in this book initially examine the effect of the basic rural laws on the Indian rural set up which provides the basis for evolution of the national and international norms especially pertaining to free trade-based sustainable development, environment, human rights, good governance, rule of law and the criminal justice system in subsequent papers.
